MAN OF THE MONTH: JORDAN TOMASEL
This month, we sat down with Jordan Tomasel, a man whose life takes him from mine sites to family nights, from airports to around-the-world escapes. Thoughtful, grounded, and quietly ambitious, Jordan brings a mix of grit and perspective to everything he does. In our chat, he opens up about fatherhood, the lessons travel has taught him, and the small rituals that keep him steady in a fast-paced world.
You’ve got one day completely off the grid, no phone, no emails. Where are you, and what are you doing?
My ideal day kicks off with an energising workout to get the blood pumping, followed by a peaceful morning at the beach — nothing beats that salty air and sun on your face. Then it’s off to the golf course for a round with mates, before wrapping things up with a great dinner alongside my wife. Simple pleasures, done well.
Mining has taken you across the globe. What’s the most surprising thing you’ve brought back with you, whether it’s a habit, a perspective, or even a story you always tell?
Americans genuinely believe in the American dream and support one another's success. Tall poppy syndrome is not common. I believe their positive mindset has been key to their innovation and economic success.
Desert island rules: you can only take one album, one meal, and one object. What makes the cut?
Album? The Presets, always. Meal? A perfectly cooked tomahawk steak, no question. And the one item? My Frescobol Carioca swim shorts from Calexico Man. If you’re going to be stranded, you might as well do it in style.
When you think about success, what does it look like to you beyond work and family?
Good health, a strong and positive mindset, and the financial freedom to live life on your own terms, without ever having to worry. That, to me, is true success.
