MAN OF THE MONTH: JOEL HEAZLEWOOD

Meet Joel, a man who knows his denim, his caravan routes, and his way around a good weekend.

For our 10-year Calexico Man birthday, we’re celebrating the gents who embody what our brand stands for; understated luxury, effortless style, and living life with a sense of adventure.

Joel Heazlewood is one of those men. A family man, business owner, and all-round doting dad, he’s as comfortable in a perfectly cut linen shirt as he is caravanning through the Queensland countryside. We caught up with Joel to talk style, travel, and a few lessons learned along the way.

If we opened your wardrobe right now, which piece has the best story behind it and what’s the story?

My light blue Lardini jacket — I wore it to my best mate’s wedding in Bali. Every time I see it, it brings back memories of a great trip and an even better celebration.

What’s a tough lesson life (or business) taught you that ended up being a blessing in disguise?

I learned that it’s okay to walk away from a big client or major contract if it doesn’t align with the business’s core values or value proposition. Staying true to what your business stands for often leads to better opportunities in the long run.

Who’s the most competitive person in your household, and what’s the game or challenge that brings it out?

That would have to be myself, and honestly, anything brings out my competitive side (big and small).

You and your family love hitting the road in your caravan. What’s one hidden gem you’ve discovered around Queensland or beyond?

That would have to be the little town of Jervis Bay in NSW. The beaches were stunning – think white sand and crystal clear water, and the whole town just had a laid back vibe that I loved.

Quick-Fire Round

Go-to weekend uniform:

For a fun-filled weekend with family and friends, it would have to be a matching set from Pierre-Louis Mascia. I love how it can take you from the beach to cocktail hour with minimal effort.

Most-worn brand from Calexico Man:

Frescobol Carioca, Orlebar brown, Jacob Cohen or Golden Goose. It is too hard to pick just one.

Morning ritual that sets the tone for your day:

Fried sunny side eggs from our farm with bacon and toast finished with crispy chill oil and a double espresso and V60 filter coffee.

Dream dinner guest (dead or alive):

It would have to be Warren Buffett, the king of value investing.

Best piece of advice you’ve ever been given:

Don’t be afraid to fail; the only person who can hold you back is yourself.

Favourite way to unwind after a big week:

Music and a good bottle of wine or single malt whisky.

Three words your mates would use to describe you:

 Foodie, funny and direct.
